A great day for Herefords.
The Interbreed Champion and the All Breeds Champion - Both awards to Herefords
HEREFORD HONOURS FOR LAKE STATION
![]() |
Rebecca McConochie from Lake Station with Lake B107 which scooped the Hereford prize and the Interbreed Junior Championship award. |
A yearling bull from Lake Station Herefords near Nelson, took out top honours in the Hereford ring at the 2007 Royal Show. This bull was also judged the Interbreed Junior Champion. Lake B107 was sired by a homebred sire and has a host of well known sires in his pedigree. They include JC Catalyst, Okawa Tyson, Knight Ryder, and Jackpot.
The young sire, Lake B107, exhibited by Rebecca McConochie, earnt a raft of the top Hereford prizes awarded by judge Rob Burrows of Beechwood Stud Culverden ably assisted by associate judge Colin McKenzie of the Achindrean Stud, Tuakau.
Judging took place between the squally showers of torrential rain and hail but Rob Burrows’ enthusiasm for the young Lake Station sire, wasn’t dampened by the atrocious conditions. He described the sire as “a rip-snorter”.
“He is an outstanding bull, a very good parader with strong bone and a strong head. He has a thick hind quarter so when you get in behind him you can really see the strength.”
Next day the placings were altered by judge Lochie Day from Australia who fancied Roselawn Style 923 (by Koanui Style) exhibited by Hayden Cowan of Roselawn, at Fairlie. He won the All Breeds Yearling Bull. It was a great two days for the Hereford breed.

Australia - Wodonga Herefords crack record $52,000 top, average $6117
![]() |

Confident Hereford seedstock producers went head-to-head to snare sought-after Mawarra Sandstorm ET1 AI at the 42nd annual Wodonga National Hereford Sale last week (Thursday, May 10), equalling the sale record price of $52,000.
The cracking result puts Herefords to the top of the southern sales table in a tough season where many other breeds have reduced offerings and cancelled sales altogether.
The impressive catalogue of top quality, well-presented potential sires sparked interest from a large gallery of upbeat buyers which paid a gross of $546,500 and average of $6117 for 90 Hereford bulls sold under the hammer.
After a lively bidding battle that sent an expectant buzz around the selling arena it was a partnership of Victorian breeders Clive McEachern, Ardno Stud, Wingiel and Barry Newcomen, Newcomen Herefords, Ensay that edged out the Trovatello family, Glendan Park stud Kyneton, Victoria to pay the sale-topping price.
The bull was selected as Hereford National Show reserve senior and reserve grand champion by judge James Laurie, “Kholwha”, Moppie via Gloucester, NSW and appealed to buyers for not only its potential as a stud sire but for the outcross of Canadian genetics – an investment that has paid off for vendors Peter and Deanne Sykes, Marwarra Stud, Longford, Victoria.
Twenty even month-old Mawarra Sandstorm was by Wabash Sandstone 200L, from Mawarra Doreen and weighed 1074 kilograms.
The sale hiked the Mawarra sale average to $19,000 for five bulls including another significant sale of $24,000 for Mawarra Sentimental paid by the Allen family’s South Boorook Pastoral Co, Mortlake, Victoria.
Both stud and commercial buyers opened their wallets to post a vote for the profitability and doing ability of Hereford cattle which stock agents say have performed outstandingly well both in the paddock and the markets during the widespread drought.
New Zealand semen rights of 300 straws in Marwarra Sandstorm were snapped up by John and Liz McKerchar, Shrimpton Hills Herefords, Cave, South Canterbury and Wayne and Maggie Williams, Glacier Herefords, South Westland. New Zealand.
The buyers were part of a touring party lead by Roger Keach of PGG Wrightson that was determined not to go home empty-handed.
Regular Wodonga visitor Western Australian Hereford breeder, Rob Francis, Yallaroo Herefords, Busselton also purchased 70 straws.
The crowd was buoyed by an early investment of $34,000 for Pam Shelley’s reserve junior champion Kaludah Top Notch, paid by leading Hereford stud and commercial breeder Adrian Spencer, Ironbark Stud, Log Cabin Lands, Barraba, NSW and Rob Haling, Reedy Creek Stud, Tamworth, NSW.
Kaludah was named most successful exhibitor at the National Hereford Show, including reserve champion junior bull honours with Kaludah Top Notch.
The Trovatello Family’s Glendan Park Stud based at Kyneton, Victoria were again strong performers at the Wodonga fixture, averaging $13,600 for five bulls, including Glendan Park Ayr which sold for $26,000 to McMullin & Miles PL, Bingeberry Stud, Rouchel near Aberdeen, NSW.
In a significant purchase by a commercial breeder, the Whiteside family of Leongatha, Victoria paid $18,000 for Jim and Pos Hann’s Courallie Andre from their Narrabri, NSW-based stud.
Other leading commercial investors included JN Laurie & Son Pty Ltd, “Palaroo”, Hillgrove NSW who paid $14,000 for Geoff King’s Bowmont Victory Blend from Bowmont Hereford Stud, Tatyoon, Victoria and $14,000 for the Trovatello Family’s Glendan Park Austin, while Greenhill Herefords, Yea, Victoria paid $13,000 for Glendan Park Argyle.
High Country buyers again favoured the Wodonga sale for the opportunity to see a range of bloodlines lined up and other buyers travelled from Uralla, NSW, Penola and Naracoorte, SA and across Victoria and southern NSW.
Geoff Taylor, Australian Hereford Society (AHS) General Manager said Herefords had grabbed the attention of bull buyers and were enjoying a resurgence in popularity based on the breed’s stellar performance through the widespread drought.
“The exceptional doing ability of Herefords throughout the big dry has sparked the interest of both straight- and cross-bred commercial producers who have seen Herefords shine at this year’s weaner sales,” Mr Taylor said.
Selling agents were also quick to declare their faith in the profitability of Herefords and remark on the excellent quality of bulls on offer at Wodonga this year.
Elders stud stock manager Victoria/Riverina, Michael Glasser and auctioneer Paul Dooley agreed the sale was an outstanding result for Herefords.
“The sale is the result of demand for Hereford cattle on the back of both northern and southern weaner sales that have seen Hereford calves come through the dry times looking better, heavier and fresher than many other breeds,” Mr Dooley said.
Kevin Norris, Landmark auctioneer said the sale was a huge success given the “trying seasons” of the last three years and reflected the Hereford breed’s exceptional doing ability.
Mr Norris said large Hereford producers had been able to preserve the nucleus of their breeding herds through drought times when many crossbred herds using terminal sires had been forced to sell.
Mr Mackay and AHS president Bruce Lester joined forces to commend vendors on the standard of cattle offered at Wodonga Hereford National Show and Sale and the heady results achieved.
Denmark - 70 Danish Herefords to Switzerland
The Danish Hereford breeders can once again be pleased that Danish Herefords are in great demand in Europe. After the large export of 150 Herefords – mainly heifers – to Russia in January 2007, another large export has taken place.
On April 13th 2007, the export company Bovi-Denmark sent 35 Danish Herefords to Switzerland. These Herefords are to be part in a new large herd, which is estimated to 70 Hereford cows. 11 days later, on April 24th, Bovi-Denmark sent another 35 Danish Herefords to Switzerland.
The Herefords to Switzerland are all polled. The animals which have been bought up from different Danish herds are pregnant heifers, cows with calves and 3 bulls.
The buyer in Switzerland has sold his dairy cows, and will now aim at a Hereford beef production based on the Danish Hereford genetics.
In the beginning of May, 2007, the export company Bovi-Denmark is sending additional Danish Herefords abroad, this time to Latvia and Estonia.
2007 shows signs of being a fantastic year of export for the Danish Hereford Association. Until now, Herefords have been exported to the following countries; North Ireland, England, Germany, Holland, Sweden, Russia, Switzerland, Latvia and Estonia.

Nostalgia’s progeny vindicate Red Hill purchase
In 2004, the Victorian-based Fraser family’s Red Hill Hereford stud, Euroa, paid $60,000 for the Sydney Royal grand champion Mawarra Nostalgia. Last Sunday (15 April) Hereford enthusiasts were full of compliments for this year’s ‘Best Hereford Exhibit’, Red Hill Blue Boy, sired by Nostalgia.
Nostalgia’s progeny were dominant in the classes in which they competed. Along with the best exhibit, they took out the junior champion female award with Red Hill Early Morn A440, and also blue ribbons with Red Hill Aura (18-20 month bull class), Red Hill Cheyenne ((24-30 month bull class), the ‘Pair of bulls’ and the Sires’ progeny classes. And just for good measure, Red Hill took out the ‘Most Successful’ award.
In his comments on the ‘Best Exhibit’ Mr Bruce Gunning (judge), Quirindi, NSW, said, “This young bull has sire potential written all over him. Weighing 654kg at just 12 months, he was 100kg heavier than the next heaviest in the 9-12 months class in which he was a very clear winner. His commanding presence coupled with all the cosmetics and great carcase pattern made him not just a stunning young bull but a clear cut above the rest”.
Continuing on with his comments, Mr Gunning said the senior champion bull (Glenwarrah Moree) was a big strong fellow with a great butt profile and excellent overall muscle pattern. The senior and grand champion female, Tondara Doreen 217 (exhibited by Coonong Pty Ltd, Urana, NSW) was a big, growthy, well-constituted animal, rearing a very good calf, and also a very clear winner.
The Collins family’s Glenwarrah stud, Bundarra, NSW, collected its first tri-colour at a Royal Show when Glenwarrah Moree took out the senior champions award. Moree’s sire was Glendan Park Top Gun W042, who was purchased by New Zealand’s Mendip Hills Station from Parnassus, in 2003 for $55,000.
Reserve senior champion bull was Welray A Cracker, exhibited by the Weller family, Nabiac, NSW. This was also a first-time broad ribbon win for the Wellers who have been long-time exhibitors at the Royal.
Reserve junior champion Hereford bull was Sugarloaf Legacy B246, exhibited by Andrew and Serena Klippel, Corryong, Vic. The Klippels also collected a broad ribbon for their reserve senior champion female, Sugarloaf Constance Z105 and their reserve junior champion female Sugarloaf Kaite B264.

United States - The 2007 National Western Stock Show in Denver USA
The Hereford breed showcased the largest breed show at the 2007 National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado, United States of America. There were more than 630 Herefords competing at the 101st show and they were all beautifully prepared and fitted. The carloads (groups of ten bulls from one stud farm) and pens of three bulls, were judged from the stock yards. Three sided pens protect the animals from the coldest winds but as the pens are open, the bulls were dusted with snow which made quite a spectacular sight from a visitor’s point of view.

The pens and carloads are judged by three judges. The bulls enter a sale ring one at the time and then return as a group. The winner of the carload competition was Star Lake Cattle Ranch. The average age of their ten bulls was 341 days and the average weight was 1277 lbs (or approximately 580 kilograms). Judges were given both raw and performance data of individual bulls as they entered the judging ring and I am sure every spectator (and there were many from all around the world) agreed with the judges’ unanimous decision to award the Star Lake Cattle Ranch with Grand Champion Carload.
During the next two days, 485 Horned and Polled Herefords competed in the show ring. These classes were judged by Mr. Doug Satree of Montague, Texas.

Last year’s national champion horned female, BR Gabrielle 5082 by BR Lansing 3060, claimed her spot in NWSS history as she was crowned the two-time national champion horned female for National Junior Hereford Association member, Rylee Barber, Channing,of Texas. |
| The Grand Champion Polled Hereford bull was La Grand Reload 80P ET. This rising 3 year bull was sired by AA PRF Wideload from a Keynote dam. He was bred by the La Grand Stud and has multiple ownership. Reload weighed 2,390 lb., scanned a fat thickness (FT) of .48 inches of backfat and had a scrotal circumference of 39.5 cm. The senior champion bull showed with EPDs of BW 5.0; WW 50; YW 79; MM 19; and M&G 44. |

A year after winning the spring calf division, SLDK Poseidon R09 ET topped the horned bull show as he was slapped yearling and grand champion. Sladek Farms, Iowa City, Iowa; Bert and Beverly Wall, Plainview, Texas; and Poseidon Syndicate, Iowa City, Iowa, own the Ankonian Midas 72 son. Poseidon weighed 2,140 lb. on show day, scanned FT .46 inches and had a 41.5 cm scrotal measurement. His EPDs read BW 3.8: WW 44; YW 69; MM 19; and M&G 41. |
Denmark - 150 Danish Herefords to Russia
The year 2006 ends very successfully for Danish Hereford breeders with a large order for 150 Herefords to Russia, - 146 heifers at the age of 6-10 months and 4 bulls at the age of 6-12 months.
The Danish Herefords are going to a farm in Krasnodar, near the Black Sea.
At the beginning of November, a Russian cattle expert visited The Danish Hereford Association to see the quality of the Danish Hereford, before signing the final contract of sale. The Russian visited 13 Hereford herds during his 3-day visit, and was very satisfied with what he saw.
Within the next two weeks, two Russians will visit Denmark for the selection of heifers and bulls. The selected cattle are going into quarantine in Ribe on December 19th. The cattle have to stay in quarantine for 21 days with daily supervision of a Russian Vet. The expected departure of the Danish Herefords will be around January 11th, 2007.
Hopefully more orders for Danish Hereford cattle and Hereford semen to Russia can be expected if this order is concluded successfully. The Danish Hereford Association has already received an enquiry for another 200 heifers and 500 straws of semen.
The Hereford cattle, is Denmark’s largest export of live beef cattle. In 2005, 441 cattle were exported, of which 105 were Herefords, meaning that almost every 4th Beef cattle, which was exported in 2005, was of the Hereford race.
Danish Hereford breeders have during 2006, experienced a considerable interest in live Danish Hereford cattle from other European countries. In 2006 Danish Herefords were exported to Finland, Holland, the Czech Republic, Switzerland, Lithuania, Sweden and Latvia.
Germany - German Hereford Association 15th Anniversary
The German Hereford breeders celebrated the 15th anniversary of the German Hereford Association in June 2006.
The event took place in Biesen at the Agrar GmbH Biesen. The celebration was a great success with over 100 guests from within the Hereford industry and from outside the Hereford business. The German Hereford breeders were pleased to welcome visitors from the Swiss Hereford Association and from the Hereford Association of the Netherlands. Australia - NEWS RELEASE - Tuesday, May 16, 2006
Red hot Wodonga Herefords sell to $46,000
Scores of Hereford-hungry buyers snapped up 125 bulls to pay a top of $46,000, gross of $816,000 and average of $6528 at the red hot 41st Annual Wodonga National Hereford Sale held at a packed Wodonga Exhibition Centre on Thursday.
Confident and determined stud breeders went head to head for bulls with sire potential and High Country commercial producers reinvested profits from heady weaner sales at a bull sale that eclipsed all other recent Wodonga fixtures of any breed.
But it was the Nixon families of Devon Court and Wallan Creek studs, Drillham, Queensland that landed the much sought after 24 month-old, 1010-kilogram sale-topping bull, Charnock Haymaker from Hugh Morgan’s Charnock Stud, Rochford, Victoria. Losing bidders were a combination of Dundee Stud, Glen Innes, NSW and the Glenellerslie Stud, Adelong, NSW.
The Trovatello family, Glendan Park Stud, Kyneton, Victoria paid $35,000 for Mawarra Rawhide, topping off a highly successful selling season for Peter and Deanne Sykes, Mawarra Stud, Longford, Victoria.
A bidding tussle between successful buyer Paul and Nola Rogers, Centennial Stud, Narellan, NSW and Bruce Fraser, Red Hill Stud, Euroa, Victoria – both of whom had inspected the bull onproperty – resulted in the third top price of $34,000 for Bowmont W185 High Energy from Geoff King’s Bowmont Stud, Tatyoon, Victoria.
Buyers were constantly reassessing their options as spirited bidding and excellent prices punctuated the catalogue time and again to result in 23 sales over $8000 and very few bulls passed in.
Landmark auctioneer, Kevin Norris, said buyers were recognizing quality in the top end of the catalogue and excellent value throughout. “With trade cattle possibly outweighing other breeds, Hereford buyers are confidently buying replacement sires,” Mr Norris said.
The stands were abuzz with expectation when the sale opened with strong demand for 63 junior bulls (to 24 months) which averaged $5887.
The senior and intermediate bull catalogue sent livestock journalists scurrying to photograph bull after bull as prices climbed higher to yield an outstanding average of $6974 for 58 intermediate bulls and $11,125 for four senior bulls.
Following a cracker on-property sale recently, Wingiel, Victoria-based studbreeders Clive, Kate and James McEachern, with truck at the ready, sought out three bulls including $23,000 Faulkland Legion from the Higgins family’s Curracabark Stud, Gloucester, NSW; $18,000 Sugarloaf Cracov Z106 from Andrew and Serena Klippel’s Sugarloaf Creek Stud, Corryong, Victoria; and $15,000 RH AAA ET1 from David Templeton’s RH Stud, Armidale, NSW.
In the highest priced sale to a commercial producer, Neil and Carmel Croker, The Knoll, Taralga, NSW paid $23,000 for Glendan Park Zanadu Z068.
Raddon, Dian and Bruce Reynolds, Fullerton Station, Fullerton via Crookwell, NSW joined forces with Robert Hain, Gunyah, Cooma, NSW to pay $20,000 for Wodonga National Senior Champion bull, Kaludah Ted from Pam and Malcolm Shelley’s Kaludah Stud, Cooma, NSW.
McMullin & Miles PL, Bingeberry Stud, Rouchel near Aberdeen, NSW paid $18,000 for Bowmont Victory Blend Z458, sending the King family’s sale average to $19,500 for three bulls.
It was also great day out for Charnock Stud, which sold four bulls to average $16,750 and Kaludah Stud which presented a large team of 13 bulls to average $7500.
Other leading stud averages included Glendan Park which sold 13 bulls to average $4962 and Mawarra’s three-bull team which averaged $20,667.
Two studs paid $16,000 for bulls – the Starr family, Foxforth stud, Guyra, NSW, for Cowboy Takeaway from Ken Godbolt’s Cowboy stud, Armidale, NSW; and Bluey Commins, Nunniong stud, Ensay, Victoria, for RH Zoro, from RH Herefords.
Repeat buyer Bill Flannagan from Omeo, Victoria paid $16,000 for Cowboy Thunderbolt, which caught his eye as Wodonga National Show Junior Champion and Sydney Royal Show Grand Champion bull.
David Hill, Elders Omeo was buying for other loyal High Country producers, buoyed by record weaner prices and returning to Wodonga yet again for their yearly bull needs.
Bombala, NSW-based commercial producers, Terry Moreing, Moreing-Morefield Partnership, paid $11,500 for Strathleigh Titanic 50, presented by Strathleigh stud, Woolbrook, NSW.
Benambra-based commercial producers, Diana and Vince Pendergast, paid $11,000 for Red Hill King Z049, from Red Hill stud.
Still considered an affordable sale, Wodonga Hereford National attracted commercial buyers from across Victoria and NSW, including noted commercial producer Steve Merriman, trading as EJ Merriman & Son, Ravensworth, Yass, NSW, who took home three bulls for an average of $8000.
The sale reinforced ringside talk of resurgence in Hereford numbers and popularity, spurred by feed efficiency research trial results in the breed’s favour, weight-for-age results in the paddock and on feed, and a shortage of straightbred Hereford females.
Michael Glasser, Elders stud stock manager Victoria/Riverina, said the sale was an outstanding result for the breed. “The sale reached some heady heights and enjoyed the depth of commercial support for an outstanding clearance. This is by far the premier result for all breeds in recent Wodonga sales,” Mr Glasser said.
Chairman of the Wodonga National Show and Sale committee, Geoff King, was thrilled with the result and Wednesday’s successful show judged by visiting United Kingdom judge Bill Quan, Border Herefords, Herefordshire. He said this year’s sale marked the first time it was mandatory for breeders to include growth estimated breeding values (EBVs) in the figures provided.
The pre-Wodonga sale annual general meeting also yielded a new Australian Hereford Society president, Bruce Lester, Moondook Herefords, Foster, Victoria.
Mr Lester takes over from retiring president, Ian Galloway, Cootharaba Herefords, Roma, Queensland who has served in the position for three years. Mr Lester said Herefords were forging ahead into a stellar future based on the breed’s proven profitability. “Hereford cattle are feed efficient, fertile animals that are ideal as a straight- or crossbred commercial herd and the eating quality is second to none,” Mr Lester said. “I am looking forward to leading the Society as it reclaims market share and reinforces the message that a low cost of production, growth for age, efficiency and meat quality make Hereford cattle the profitable choice for Australian beef producers.”

King family Herefords top $855 to lead Northern weaner sales....
Repeat buyers paid to a top of $855 per head – up yet again on last year’s sale – for top quality Hereford steers at Bruce, Dorothy and Stephen King’s annual on-property sale at “Eulourie”, Upper Horton last week.
Selling agent Ross Pollock from Pollock and Cummins, Barraba and Gunnedah, said the sale grossed $406,000 and averaged $637for 640 head including 370 steers that averaged $697 and 270 heifers that averaged $556.
“They were a magnificent line of cattle – even as peas in a pod, and the buyers were nearly all repeat buyers which means they are making money out of their Eulourie purchases,” Mr Pollock said.
Richard and Susie Duddy, “Killain”, Tamworth, bid up big to take home the first 11 pens, paying to a top of $855 and average of $791 for 178 steers. The top pen of steers weighed in at 375 kilograms prior to the sale and returned an impressive 228 cents/kg liveweight.
Mr Duddy will background the steers on oats before turning off into feedlots or direct to works.
“This is the fourth year in a row that we have bought at the Eulourie sale and we organise the cattle and place them as the market dictates – either grown out as slaughter cattle for Cargill or sold into Rockdale feedlot,” Mr Duddy said.
Mr Duddy said the Eulourie herd was a magnificent example of top quality Hereford cattle based on excellent genetics and long-term selection for performance.
“We have absolute confidence they will finish within market specifications and return a profit for us as backgrounders,” he said.
Hereford-cross calves top record High Country yarding at $890...
Hereford-Shorthorn heifers reigned supreme in a record yarding of 9700 calves at the prestigious Elders Mountain Weaner Calf Sales last week where determined buyer competition pushed prices to a top of $890/head.
The sale-topping 15 Hereford-Shorthorn heifers sold by Omeo producers AC & NH Smith outclassed all other breeds at the three-venue, two-day sale and sold to repeat buyers DJ and HA Wigg, Maffra, Victoria.
D & T Betts continued the Hereford dominance at the Omeo fixture to sell 10 Hereford-Shorthorn steers for $886 to local butcher Omeo Meats. The steer price eclipsed last year’s record of $882. The Bett’s offering was February-weaned – a practice that met with buyer appreciation – and weight estimates were 440 kilograms liveweight.

Top price at Omeo calf sale with these 10 steers, selling for $886 were vendors, Tania, and Don Betts, Omeo, Vic, and children Tyler, Tori and Bradon. The Betts sold 42, steers, April /May ’05 drop sired by Yarram Park bulls. |
The glamour yarding of top class Whiteface cattle and ‘Omeo Roans’ satisfied both vendors and buyers despite a tough season leading up to the sale.
Peter Steer, Manager, Elders Bairnsdale, said the tough season had only proved to demonstrate the Hereford breed’s great ability to perform.
“Herefords show their true ability to perform in harsh conditions and with no rain falling this year the calves lacked the bloom of the previous year,” Mr Steer said.
At Ensay JA Commins & Co and WJ Armit & Partners kicked off the sale with their annual drafts of yearling steers (16-18 months). The 369 Commins steers were snapped up by Charlton Feedlot for a top of $820 and average of $753, while 112 Armit-bred steers sold to a top of $730 and average $689 and 62 heifers sold to a top of $595 and averaged $572.
Chris, Alastair, Bruce, Virginia and Kate Commins, Ensay, Vic sold 369 steers all Mundook Blood, up to $820 and averaging $753. The steers top pens went to Charlton feedlot. |

- Agriculture: Hereford Bull Busts Through
By John Barlow
Editor

Rancher Grant Hirsche made Calgary Stampede history last week when his Hereford
bull claimed the Supreme Champion title.
Nine cattle breeds were shown at the Beef Cattle Supreme Champions competition
and, for the first time in the event's history, a Hereford won one of the three
titles. The competition includes Supreme Bull, Supreme Female and the newest
event Breeder's Herd.
On Monday Hirsche, who ranches east of Aldersyde, was still in awe of claiming
his first Supreme title.
"It is pretty neat, to be honest," said Hirsche. "For us, we
have been involved in the Stampede as much as anyone, but we never won this."
Ironically, the Supreme Champion Bull was an animal Hirsche purchased at the
Calgary Bull Sale this spring.
"He was not really a great bull," said Hirsche with a laugh, "and
none of the breeders were really interested in him. But he increased his popularity
at Stampede."
Hirsche swept the Hereford competition at Stampede this year winning Champion
Female (BP 108J Lass 122L), Champion Bull (BCD 140L Dom Lad 326N) as well as
Reserve Bull title (GH Col Patton 20P). Hirsche's Reserve Champion was the calf
on the 2004 Grand Champion Heifer at the Stampede as well. Hirsche also had
a heifer calf out of a previous Stampede Grand Champion Bull.
In fact, Hirsche Herefords have won at least one banner in the breed competition
every year they have attended Stampede. However, the Supreme Champion title,
which was introduced in 1989, had always eluded Hirsche.
This year he finally broke through. Hirsche represented the Hereford breed in
every category in the Supreme Champions competition as a result of his wins
in the breed competition.
It was his new bull, which he has now nicknamed "Supreme" that earned
him the much sought after Supreme Champion banner for his popular Okotoks butcher
shop Hirsche/Fraser Meats.
Three bulls were judged to have the qualities needed to be crowned Supreme,
but for the first time in the Supreme's history, a Hereford bull was crowned
Supreme.
"The Hereford has never won this," said Hirsche, "It's exciting.
We've been in it so many times where we were close. You go back to the barn
and there's no recognition for second place."
Hirsche said it is not a surprise the Hereford breed had not won a Supreme Championship
in the past because Hereford breeders have focussed on maternal characteristics
instead of bulk.
"Hereford breeders don't concentrate on muscles so they are not as thick
as continental breeds, breeds like Charolais or Limousin," explained Hirsche.
Also, he said many of the breeds like Simmental and Limousin are primarily black
and that has been a popular colour for judges.
Regardless, the triumph in Calgary has had an immediate impact on Hirsche Herefords.
On Monday, Hirsche was playing host to a contingent from Mexico who wanted to
tour his ranch and on Tuesday a group from Australia is also visiting the Hirsche's
Hereford ranch.
"It is back to work," said Hirsche with a smile. "This very much
helps business, but it is nice to be recognized by your peers."
Hirsche grew up with his dad's small Angus herd and he was herdsman for Floyd
Anderson's Herefords for about four and a half years before taking 15 Hereford
cows with him and moving to his own place near Fort Macleod. Over the following
eight years, Hirsche Herefords built their herd to 150 cows. They moved the
entire operation to High River 13 years ago and have grown the herd to 500 cows.
Some of the genetics still run back to those original 15 cows.

- Dubbo national bull sale tops $60,000
Spirited
bidding by beef breeders from throughout Australia saw the hammer fall for a
top price of $60,000 at this year's Dubbo National Poll Hereford Bull Show and
Sale.
Grossing over $740,000 with an 88 per cent clearance and an outstanding $7057
average, the result represents the increased demand for proven-quality genetics
that perform and profit under any seasonal condition.
Taking
top honours was Kidman Blue Chip Y221, bred and offered by the Carlow family
from Kidman Cattle Company at Dubbo. He was sashed Junior and Grand Champion
before going on to sell for the top dollar to a syndicate of Poll Hereford breeders.
Christian Allen, manager of Llandillo Poll Herefords, spoke on behalf of the
purchasers to say they were impressed by the young sire, as "he (Blue Chip)
was definitely a standout during judging. A bull that is very correct with outlook,
good skin and hair type".
The 915-kilogram bull was sired by Pine Hill Atherton U223 and out of Kidman
Moonbeam R1. At 20 months of age, Blue Chip has a measurement of 125 square
centimetres for eye muscle area, with rib and rump scans of 10mm and 9mm respectively.
Vendor, Randall Carlow, was pleased to see his operation's breeding objectives
confirmed by the result, saying it was great to be recognised and have people
notice what they're doing.
The Kidman cattle continued their impressive performance, with lot 121, Kidman
Cosmo Y46, selling for $26,000.
Second top-price of the day went to the Lindendale stud of Tamworth, selling
Lindendale Eaton 4 for $33,000 to the Fry family's, Jamena Poll Hereford Stud,
of South Forest in Tasmania.
Williams Cattle Company at Oodnadatta showed their support, securing a bulk-buy
of 17 ready-to-work sires for their commercial operation.
Highlights of leading sale prices included, $28,000 for lot 101, senior champion
bull, Allendale Tumbarumba. Offered by consistent performers, Allendale Poll
Hereford Stud, and purchased by Cascade Poll Herefords of Currabubula, Tumbarumba
was sired by Allendale Napoleon T73 and out of Allendale Marshall Lass U164.
The Allendale stud had a 100 per cent clearance of their six-head offering and
grossed close to $70,000.
The double sale-price figures continued, with: lot 117, Rilo Park Kingair selling
for $26,000 to Tim Fincham; lot 44, Yalgoo Boulder Y056 selling for $20,000
to Clay Pool Poll Herefords; and lot 25, Tycolah Cossack Warrior selling for
$19,000 to Kurrum Burra and Minlacowie Poll Herefords.
Show section judge, Chris Steer of Warrensville Poll Herefords at Bordertown,
was impressed with the 119 bulls presented.
"There was tremendous quality right through the lines of cattle. The benchmark
was certainly very, very high," he said.
