Sweden: Record price at the bull testing sale

Sweden’s yearly sale of tested bulls on the 19th of March turned out to be one we will find hard to forget.
24 bulls took part in the testing which began in August last year and 17 of those received a T-total of 100 or more.
100 is the minimum required to be approved and is average. Anything above that number is above average for the group. But to have a T-total of 100 or more does not necessarily automatically qualify the bull for the sale. The bulls must also pass the vet check, conformation minimum, hooves are inspected for faults and the scrotum is measured and all must have a reasonably quiet temperament. No stone is left unturned!

Viking Genetics have first pick

In Sweden the breed associations breeding advisors recommend AI company Viking Genetics, which bulls are suitable candidates for collecting semen from. The staff at Viking Genetics then travel to the bull testing station prior the sale to look at the recommended bulls and to discuss which of them is most suitable. This year the honours went to Göran Johansson & Helena Jonsson of the Galtås Herd and their bull PP King of Galtås was chosen. “King” had a T-total of 113 – the joint high score bull. He also had HH 86 for conformation. King is by a home bred bull sired by K-Cow Nacho Man. His dam is from the Lynette family which has been in Sweden since the beginning of Hereford breeding in Sweden. The maternal grandsire is Lamport’s Magnum and great maternal grandsire is Harvie Jackpot.

Record prices

The last few years have seen relatively disappointing prices at the bull sale. Some speculate that low prices at the sale may have been due to Brynolf Ragnarssons embryo import calf sale. Brynolf has helped the breed enormously in Sweden by importing embryos of the highest possible quality to Sweden and all the resulting calves were sold after weaning in the autumn by auction. And prices were high! People don’t just use bull calves like those for only a couple of years, and we think that is why interest for the bulls at the bull testing station has been so low. But like I said, this is only speculation. This year was better! Or maybe it’s because this years crop of bulls were the most interesting for a long time. The people on the stands were packed like sardines! (Just as well with regards to the many minus degrees and the fact that the auction is held in a marquee).

Göran Johansson receiving the award for the best tested bull dam, mother to this years AI bull, presented by Lennart Andersson (Chairman)

The first bull to sell was last years AI bull, Salut av Svanaholm T-total 110 who was sold to Roland Jansson, Vice chairman of our association for 55.000SEK. Roland was quite pleased with himself and said to association acquaintances Göran Johansson and Einar Lysell, "Now boys, I call that a beginning!"
The next bull to sell was Dunder of Ingemanstorp, T-total 113 who was sold to Einar Lysell & Miranda Harding of the Bårarp Herd for 63.000SEK much to the shock of Roland Jansson and everybody else (The record price for a Hereford bull in Sweden we think has been around the 60.000SEK mark). Dunder is by an embryo import by JSF Devo and dam of sire is GL T5 Profound 80U April 37Y. Dunders dam is also an ET import from the Saddle-Valley 46B Donna 833H cow and sired by Remitall Online. But this was not the record price! Two more bulls sold first. One with T-total of 112 sold for 25.000SEK and one with T-total 110 sold for 46.000SEK.

7053 BPH Omega ET,
dam to the record bull Bårarps Jaguar

Then it was Bårarps Jaguars turn to enter the ring. Jaguar was sold for an amazing 77.000SEK to Olle W. Larsson of the Oden herd in Skövde. With this top price he goes into the history book. Even though we are unsure as to the exact record price in Sweden for a Hereford bull the fact is clear that none has ever been sold in the region of 70.000SEK.
Jaguar has a T-total of 110 and has terrific breeding values and he too has ET breeding. His sire is K-Cow Nacho Man and dam is 7053 BPH Omega ET. Sire of dam is Remitall Online and her dam is Bar75 Omega 183P ET 28Y. BPH Omega ET breeds calves of top class, one after the other, and is the top cow in Sweden for breeding index which is +30. She has been shown only once, as a heifer which resulted in 1st place.
One more bull went for more than the (believed) earlier record price, Herbert of Källmossen T-total 104, who was sold for 66.000SEK. Herbert is by Wilgor SQD 55K Big Northern 1 S.

New Zealand - Silver Medal Sausage

Michael van der Hoeven and Peter Humphries, of Te Awamutu's Magills Butchers, sample the beef sausage which scored a silver medal at this year's Great New Zealand Sausage Competition.

Magills silver medal snarler, one of their big sellers, comes from fresh, locally sourced Hereford beef, and is made using an old Dutch recipe that Mike's fater Adrian brought to New Zealand when he emigrated 60 years ago.

Very meaty and succulent, but with little fat or oil oozing out the sides when you bite into it. Just beautiful!

Hereford Beef - Simply the Best!

Hereford beef from Ireland came out on top in a steak test carried out in Germany by a food magazine.

Steaks from eight major beef producing countries were tasted by an expert panel.

The judges evaluated flavour, tenderness and texture, as well as visual appearance.

The Irish rib eye steak was chosen as the clear winner, ahead of the anticipated favourite, New Zealand Wagyu beef, which sells for up to €150/kg.

Other competitors included Argentinean Angus steak, Angus fillet from US, Florentine steak from Italy, Charolais fillet from France, bison from US and German Simmental beef.

The highest price ever reached for a Hereford Bull in Africa was paid recently when the bull Locheim Markwart WDW06-88 was sold for ZAR360,000 (US$45000) at the Locheim Sale of Phillip and Willem de Waal.

Puchasers: Mr PJ Budler and Louis van der Watt of Bonhaven Beef Cattle, Tarkastad, Eastern Cape, SA.

This is about four times the previous South African Record price!!

Markwart was the National Reserve Champion in 2008. He was sired by Emba Camel 2030 and his dam is Locheim Olya 0060.
